  Summary: Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is seeking one-two part-time after school dance teacher(s) to join our performing arts program. This person is an enthusiastic and skillful teacher/choreographer who possesses a significant body of knowledge around dance, choreography, and teaching pedagogy. The dance program at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy is a well-established and vibrant program that seeks to foster in young dancers a strong foundation and passion for dance.

   

  Both companies are audition based and meet after school from 3:30-5:30 August - May with more frequent rehearsals in January and February in preparation for the annual dance concert.

  There are also opportunities for other smaller format performances later in the year.

   

  The contemporary dance company, named Veritas Dance Project, meets on Tuesdays & Thursdays. The focus of this company is on creating a body of work for the mainstage dance concert and giving advanced student dancers the opportunity to work together in a concert dance company environment. Students in the contemporary company are also enrolled in a dance class on campus and many belong to local studios.

   

  The hip-hop company, named Ultimate Dance Crew, meets on Wednesdays. The focus of this group is hip-hop and related dance forms. An emphasis on the cultural and world traditions that influence this genre is a plus. Dancers in this group are not required to be in any additional dance class (although many are).

   

  This position can be filled by one person teaching both the contemporary and hip-hop companies or it can be two different people depending on areas of expertise. When applying, please let us know if you are interested in both or just one specific company.

  Essential Job Functions:

  • Instruct students in a range of contemporary and hip-hop dance methods;
  • Choreograph work for the annual dance concert;
  • Collaborate with the full-time dance teacher to ensure choreography and costuming is consistent with the dance concert theme;
  • Maintain communication with the dance teacher and department chair to ensure consistency and excellence in the experience for our dancers and of the dance program;
  • work collaboratively to meet the needs of the students;
  • Create a variety of student-centered learning experiences using a range of instructional methods, reflective of best teaching and dance practices;
  • Create and maintain rehearsal schedules, coordinate and hire subs when needed;
  • Participate in dance concert rehearsals and productions; 
  • Work with budgets for costuming (dance concert);
  • Communicate with students and parents to maintain open and informative dialogue;
  • Work with the dance teacher to select, prepare and coordinate one-two dance pieces for external events (GALA, grandparents’ day, etc.). Can be from the dance concert repertoire;
  • Hold yearly company auditions in the spring.

  
  

  Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge and skill with a broad range of dance styles  (with an emphasis on contemporary, hip hop, modern, and non-western dance traditions), history, theory, choreography, and dance pedagogies;
  • Some background in kinesiology, injury prevention, etc. is a plus;
  • Bachelor’s degree in dance/choreography;
  • Previous teaching experience required (at the high school level preferred);
  • Commitment to excellent teaching and lifelong learning through ongoing participation in professional development;
  • Ability to work and teach in a variety of locations (on stage/within a theater, in a traditional classroom, in a dance studio, etc.);
  • Excellent classroom management, communication and organization skills;
  • Proficiency with technology; 
  • Experience choreographing and collaborating on dance productions;
  • Basic understanding of production tech (lighting, sound, etc.) is a plus;
  • Ability to articulate and design production elements and work closely with the production team (dance teacher, technical director, lighting, and sound crew);
  • Flexibility with work schedule is necessary as day, evening and weekend hours will be periodically required. 

   

  The ideal candidate is collaborative, adaptive, creative, and passionate about education in the arts. They must possess strong interpersonal skills in order to create cohesive performance communities that are collaborative and nurturing, while also maintaining high, yet achievable, standards. The candidate should be eager to work closely with other members of the department and school community to meet the goals and needs of all stakeholders.

   

   

  Physical and Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires a majority of time (up to 70%) to be spent standing.

  • Requires the ability to stand, stoop, reach, and bend and the ability to lift, carry and/or pull boxes and items not to exceed at least 30 pounds.
  • Adverse movements required such as reaching overhead, bending, or crouching.
  • Simultaneous/repetitive uses of both hands is required for writing and data entry.
  • Excellent sensory skills are important (sight, hearing and speech) as well as the ability to communicate effectively.
