THEATRE

Together, we find our strength.

Our theatre program centers on the concept of Ubuntu, a South African philosophy that translates to “I am because we are.” In essence, my humanity is bound up in yours. Classes and rehearsals are rooted in ensemble principles, and actor’s focus on connecting the mind, body and heart as they create characters and tell stories.

We offer four levels of theatre elective. Additionally, the Visual and Performing Arts Department produces a Fall Play and a Spring Musical. Not only are students performing on stage, but they're also involved in every aspect of the production— from building and painting scenery, running lights and sound and stage management.

OUR MOST RECENT PRODUCTIONS

FALL 2024: LITTLE WOMEN

Based on Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel, LITTLE WOMEN follows the lives of the March sisters: romantic Meg, spirited Jo, loving Beth and tenacious Amy. Jo March isn’t your typical Victorian lady. She’s indecorous and headstrong, and one day she’s going to be a great American novelist. As she and her sisters grow up in the middle of the Civil War, they strive to be brave, intelligent, and imaginative young women. As adulthood approaches, each sister must negotiate her private ambitions with society’s expectations. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class and personal tragedy, Jo March gives us her greatest story: that of the March sisters, four dreamers destined to be imperfect little women.

This is a retelling of LITTLE WOMEN with its own interpretation of the story for a contemporary audience. We will explore choice, gender roles, individuality, female identity, sisterhood, family and more as we tackle this story and make it our own. This is not the LITTLE WOMEN you might be expecting, and then again it is.

SPRING 2024: THE DROWSY CHAPERONE

Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Golden Age musical, featuring one show-stopping song and dance number after another.

With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. Mix in two lovers on the eve of their wedding, a bumbling best man, a desperate theatre producer, a not-so-bright hostess, two gangsters posing as pastry chefs, a misguided Don Juan and an intoxicated chaperone, and you have the ingredients for an evening of madcap delight.

Hailed by New York Magazine as "The Perfect Broadway Musical," The Drowsy Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes that characterize the musical theatre genre.

FALL 2023: THE MIRACULOUS JOURNEY OF EDWARD TULANE

"The miraculous journey of Edward Tulane" is a play for those who are willing to open their hearts and engage their imagination. Edward Tulane is an expensive toy rabbit made of china. He is loved by a little girl named Abilene, but Edward doesn’t care. He is vain and self-centered. He has no interest in anyone other than himself. On an ocean voyage, Edward is accidentally thrown overboard and sinks to the bottom of the sea. So begins his journey—a journey over which he has no control, for he is a toy rabbit. He can neither move nor speak.

As years pass by, Edward meets many different people in many different situations: an older grieving couple who find comfort in Edward’s presence, a hobo and his dog who introduce Edward to a whole community of homeless wanderers, a farmer in need of a scarecrow, a sad little boy and his very ill sister, and finally a doll mender and an old doll who teach Edward an invaluable lesson. Through this miraculous journey, Edward learns what it is to love, what it is to lose that love, and how to find the courage to love again. Based on Kate DiCamillo’s beautiful novel of the same name, the play is a theatrical tour de force for a strong ensemble of actors and musicians.
