During spring break, Eva traveled to Costa Rica for a global service trip with eight other students from Flintridge Sacred Heart.

What is your favorite memory from this trip?

My favorite memory from my trip to Costa Rica was volunteering at the Escuela la Lucha. During my time at the school, I connected with many students and staff. I learned about the seven provinces of Costa Rica and tasted new foods. Interacting with the students during their breaks was so much fun! Playing tag and soccer with the young students was one of my favorite memories of the trip.

What is something you learned on this trip that you will inspire you or remain with you for years to come?

One thing that will remain with me for years to come is our service work completed at the Escuela la Lucha. We had the opportunity to convert a storage room into a new classroom for the incoming kindergarten students. I was able to see the dull storage room turn into a vibrant classroom with purple and green inviting walls. Our work done refurbishing and painting the classroom brought joy to the students and staff at the Escuela la Lucha, and I will forever be proud of our work.

What are the top three things that you miss from being on this trip?

I miss everyone we met during our trip, including our guide, Randell. I also miss trying new food including gallo pinto, plátanos, and coconut cookies. Lastly, I miss the breathtaking views of various landscapes.

What was your favorite part of Costa Rica?

I enjoyed every part of Costa Rica including the zip-lining tour and the Crisley Cespedes farm tour. But if I had to choose, my favorite part would be our service work at the Escuela la Lucha and spending time with the community.

Tell us about the people you met.

Everyone I encountered in Costa Rica always had a smile in their face. They were so joyful, kindhearted and polite. They were wanting to converse with me although there was a slight language barrier.

What advice do you have for students who attend a similar trip in the future?

I would advise students to definitely consider going on a similar global service trip in the future. I would also advise the students to be adventurous and try everything.

Anything else you want to share about your experience?

I had the best time in Costa Rica, volunteering, learning to surf, and hiking to a waterfall. I learned so much about Costa Rican culture and history and tried so many new foods.

What clubs, organizations, sports, service projects etc. are you involved in?

I am a board member of Mu Alpha Theta and Multicultural Student Union. I am one of the captains of the Cross Country team, play on the Varsity soccer team and participate in Track and Field. I am also involved in CSF and NHS.
