I also see an application of what I’ve learned about being Catholic everyday, through the teachers, my peers, our staff, and administration. All the stuff I read in those textbooks is living and breathing; we really do it here on the Hill.
Hi, I’m Lea and I’m a senior. I’ve been going to Catholic school since I was four years old. At my elementary school and through middle school we had the normal Catholic school religion classes with the Loyola Press textbooks, learned about the details of the Catholic church, did my First Communion and First Reconciliation, studied the sacraments, and that was the extent of my knowledge of the Catholic aspect of Catholic schools.
Coming to Flintridge Sacred Heart changed my perspective and understanding of what it means and how special it is to get a Catholic school education. Here, we still learn in religion classroom, but I really feel like I’ve learned the most outside of them. I wrote a piece for the Veritas Shield about the Catholic Church and the trials and tribulations I’ve had with it. I think going to Flintridge Sacred Heart has helped me a lot in working those issues out for and within myself because the school showed me that Church and Loyola Press textbooks are far from the only ways to understand and experience God and faith.
For me, I’ve learned the most through the retreats we have here. I was lucky enough to be a leader for both the junior year Catalina retreat and Kairos. Retreat leadership and retreats in general have been the most important expressions of my faith I’ve had. I know that that’s a really special opportunity unique to Catholic schools and I think very unique to Flintridge Sacred Heart. I also see an application of what I’ve learned about being Catholic everyday, through the teachers, my peers, our staff, and administration. All the stuff I read in those textbooks is living and breathing; we really do it here on the Hill. I’ve experienced my faith and education in tandem here in a really special way because we show, not just tell. And I’m really grateful to get to go to a Catholic school like that.
